CBD oil for pets: all you need to know

2 comments Oct 1, 2018

You’ve probably heard about it. You’ve probably even seen headlines like:

'A Staffie had a 6cm tumor that disappeared in 6 weeks and didn’t come back.’ Or ‘Schitzu had painful arthritis in the legs but after two months, he goes for long walks.’

And then you’ve probably thought, what the pug?

These little miracles are all thanks to CBD Oil (cannabidiol oil).
It’s the hot topic in the canine world - and another wonderful holistic remedy for our four legged friends. Used for medicinal purposes, CBD Oil helps with various pooch problems like inflammation, pain, epilepsy/seizures, separation anxiety and, most importantly, has cancer fighting properties.

You read right. CBD and other substances found in hemp oil and seed (and this is a biggie!) has been found to fight cancer, kill cancer cells and inhibit growth, thanks to its anti-tumour properties.

Furthermore, this miracle medicine promotes heart health – reducing heart rates and blood pressure, and is also good for treating seizures and epilepsy (which affect 5% of dogs).

And pain could be a thing of the past as the cannabinoids in CBD work so well for pain that scientists are considering it as a new class of drug for the treatment of chronic pain and decreasing pain (including neuropathy and nerve-related pain). Pawfect!

So where does this wonder elixir come from? The oil is derived from a natural component of hemp. Not to be confused with hemp seed oil (which is made from the seeds and primarily used as a protein supplement or as an ingredient found in beauty products), CBD Oil comes from a different part of the plant – from the flowers, leaves and stalk. Because of this, CBD Oil has different properties too. Properties too good to pass up for your dog!

This begs the question – is it legal in Australia? CBD Oil is classified as a ‘schedule 4’ item meaning that it can only be prescribed in Australia by a very limited number of doctors and for very specific situations. Due to this limitation, Australians can purchase online from overseas websites (so far, there has been no prosecutions for people buying CBD oil online). However Doggy Grub advises to make sure it is organic and of high quality!

Hi Marlene, unfortunately there is nowhere you can purchase it (yet) in Australia. All you will find is indeed Hemp seed oil or hemp seed treats. Hopefully the legislation changes soon….
