Rosemary & Dogs: A Fragrant Herb with Tail-Wagging Benefits

Rosemary & Dogs: A Fragrant Herb with Tail-Wagging Benefits

Ever wondered if that fragrant rosemary sprig you love to cook with could also be good for your pup? The answer is yes!

This humble herb does more than make your roast potatoes taste amazing—it can also offer some fantastic health benefits for dogs. And the best part? You can easily sneak it into their diet with a homemade treat (recipe coming up!).

Why Rosemary is a Great Addition to Your Dog’s Diet

Rosemary isn’t just another pretty herb. It’s packed with antioxidants that help fight free radicals, which can contribute to aging and illness. This makes it a natural immune booster for your pup. If your dog struggles with digestion, rosemary can also lend a helping paw by easing bloating and supporting gut health. Plus, it’s known for its antimicrobial properties, making it a natural food preservative.

And here’s something unexpected—rosemary has been linked to improved memory and reduced stress. Some studies suggest that its scent alone can promote relaxation, which might explain why some dog-friendly grooming products include rosemary oil. A sniff of rosemary in the air could help keep your pup feeling zen.

A Word of Caution

Of course, like all good things, rosemary should be given in moderation. While it’s generally safe for dogs, too much can cause digestive upset. And if your dog has a history of seizures, it’s best to steer clear, as some reports suggest it might trigger episodes in sensitive dogs. If you’re ever unsure, a quick chat with your vet is always a good idea.

Homemade Rosemary Treats for Your Pup

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour

  • ½ cup rolled oats

  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, finely chopped

  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce

  • 1 egg

  • ¼ cup water (as needed)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, oats, Parmesan cheese, and rosemary.

  3. Stir in the applesauce and egg, mixing until a dough starts to form. If the mixture feels too dry, add a splash of water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together.

  4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes.

  5. Place the treats on your baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

  6. Let them cool completely before offering one to your pup!

These biscuits store well in an airtight container for up to a week, but chances are, your dog will finish them long before then!

Rosemary is more than just a delicious herb—it’s a simple way to add a health boost to your dog’s diet. Whether you sprinkle a little into their meals or bake up a batch of these rosemary biscuits, your pup will get a tasty treat and some great benefits.
